TEANECK NEW THEATRE STAGES "SURF'S UP," A MUSICAL PARODY

Kick the winter blues with "Surf's Up," a musical parody of (and tribute to) the beach movies of the sixties, by Richard M. Adler and Eric Kornfield. The production, which inaugurates the 20th season for Teaneck New Theatre (TNT), is directed by Marilyn Schilkie, with musical direction by Dennis Schaefer and choreography by Carrie Nagy. Peter Fill serves as producer. "Surf's Up" will be staged at The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC), 39 Broadway, Hackensack, on Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 17-March 4 at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays, Feb.19-March 5 at 3:00 p.m.

This singing and dancing show celebrates love (both young and old). While it might sound like the beach movies of the 1960s, "Surf's Up" is a loving take-off on that genre. The characters: Barbara Ann is a 17-year-old loner and valedictorian. Hotdog rules the surf. Derrick Von Dusseldorf heads a nutty motorcycle gang. There's a peculiar professor, and a seductive French photographer. "Surf's Up" is an engaging musical that will tempt audiences to sing along with such familiar tunes as "Do You Wanna Dance," "Surfin' USA" and "Barbara-Ann" and..."Surf's Up." Also, the Pottery Barn-Kids mail order catalogue is diving in by donating "Surf's Up" beach towels as door prizes.

Hotdog, the 20-year-old ladies' man, is played by Brandon Ruckdashel of Jersey City. Ruckdashel has appeared in New York, North Carolina and Virginia in such shows as Pippin, Hair and Chorus Line.

Barbara Ann, the 18-year-old surfer wannabe is Caity Olenowski (Denville), whose favorite roles include Maria in Smile!, and Rusty in Footloose. Olenowski also appeared off-Broadway in A Little Princess.

Bob McCreedy (Hotdog at 60) is portrayed by Robert Hernest (Hewitt), whose credits include film and TV. Hernest trained at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Barb McCreedy (Barbara Ann at 58) is Mary-Ann L. Barranger (Bound Brook). Barringer has performed with community groups in such shows as South Pacific, Oklahoma! and The Rose Tattoo.

Surfer dude Bongo is played by Ryan Adler (Monroe, N.Y.). Adler appeared in the movie Park, shown at the N.Y.C. Short Film Festival, and was seen in Other People's Money.

Gang leader Derek Von Dusseldorf is played by Oscar Flores (Ridgewood, N.Y.).

The peculiar professor is Chris Mavrick (North Plainfield). Mavrick, a performing artist, has appeared on TV's Rescue Me and music videos, and is working on an independent film.

Seductive French photographer Fifi LeClique is Lisa Garrabrant (Little Falls), who trod the TNT boards as Blanche in Nightwatch. She was in ArtHouse Productions' The Heist Project and Heat Lightning at Main Street Arts.

Smart surfer Whitey is played by Joshua David Bishop (Brooklyn). Bishop has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, and toured in France, Poland and Germany. Roles include The Leading Player in Pippin.

Surfer Junior is Mark Schilkie (Teaneck), who previously appeared as Chris Cringle in TNT's production of "Beau Jest" and also stage managed several TNT shows.

Mary Lou/Cookie/choreographer is Carrie Nagy (Clifton). Nagy created the Street Dance program at N. J. School of Dramatic Arts at 12 Miles West Theatre Co., and was seen in Night of the Meek at 12MW, 42nd Street (Gladys) and the film Diner Coffee.

The cast also includes Karen Cardell, Jeff Roches (Manhattan), Emerson Daniel James III (Plainfield) and Kerri Ford.

Marilyn Schilkie (Teaneck) is an experienced director whose most recent TNT outings were Night Watch, Beau Jest , 12 Angry Jurors and The Mousetrap.

Richard Adler (Monroe, N.Y.) is co-author and assistant to the director. Adler is a performer, record producer and concert promoter who promoted The Beach Boys concert in 1969.

Tickets for "Surf's Up" are $18; $15 for students, seniors and theatre parties of 10 or more. For reservations and information, call TNT at (201) 692-0200. If available, tickets can be purchased at the door prior to performance.

"THE LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO"
a romantic comedy-drama
by Pulitzer Prize winner Alfred Uhry
(author of Driving Miss Daisy)
directed by Marilyn Schilkie
May 5 - 21, 2006

TEANECK NEW THEATRE PRESENTS HIT BROADWAY PLAY "LAST NIGHT OF BALLYHOO"

Last Night of Ballyhoo, the romantic comedy-drama which netted a 1997 Best Play Tony Award for Alfred Uhry (Pulitzer Prize-winner for Driving Miss Daisy), will be presented by Teaneck New Theatre (TNT) on Friday and Saturday, May 5-20, at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, May 7-21, at 3:00 p.m. Directed by Marilyn Schilkie, Last Night of Ballyhoo takes the stage at The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center (HCAC), 39 Broadway, Hackensack.

This hit Broadway play is set in Atlanta during the 1939 world premiere of Gone With the Wind, but the show's characters are focused on Ballyhoo, the social event of the season for Atlanta's Jewish community. Boo Levy is a widow who will move heaven and earth to make sure that her dreamy daughter Lala has a date for the formal dance on the last night of the Ballyhoo festivities. Enter Joe Farkas, the down-to-earth New York Jew recently hired by Boo's brother Adolph to work in the family factory. Boo has a high opinion of her family's place in local Jewish society and believes that Joe doesn't measure up. Sister-in-law Reba Freitag and her daughter Sunny don't see Joe in quite the same way. (Nor does brother Adolph.) Also in the picture is Peachy Weil, an egotistical young Southerner whose family background places him in the social elite. As events and romantic entanglements sort themselves out, some folks even learn a thing or two.

Director Schilkie, whose recent TNT directorial outings include Surf's Up, Night Watch, Beau Jest and 12 Angry Jurors, was drawn to Last Night of Ballyhoo because "the play shows how people with a common heritage can be so different in the way they perceive that heritage." Says Schilkie: "Ballyhoo is a funny and sincere love story that reveals how love can help people understand who and what they are."

Pragmatic, snobbish Boo is played by Diane Moran of North Haledon in her second appearance with TNT. Moran's initial TNT outing was All My Sons (Sue Bayliss), and she recently was seen in the Bergen County Players production of A Cheever Evening. Realistic businessman Adolph is Maywood resident Neil Kahn, whose previous TNT appearances include All My Sons (Joe Keller), Don't Drink the Water (The Sultan of Bashir), Isn't It Romantic (Paul Stewart) and Laughter on the 23rd Floor (Max Prince). Carrie Littman of Lake Hiawatha, who portrays quirky Lala, has been onstage with TNT in The Mousetrap (Miss Casewell) and Harvey (Nurse Kelly). More recent credits: The Shape of Things (Evelyn) and Defying Gravity (Teacher) at William Paterson University.

Kind-hearted Reba is played by Englewood Cliffs resident Susan Reiser, who has previously graced the TNT stage in Fanny's First Play (Dora Delaney), 12 Angry Jurors (Juror No. 12) and Night Watch (Officer Vanelli). Dagney Cassella of Carlstadt is making her TNT debut as the college student Sunny. Credits include The Skin of Our Teeth, The Pajama Game, How to Succeed (Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star nomination) and a vocal technique video with Paul Sorvino. Brian Whelan, is making his TNT debut as the appealing Joe. The arrogant Peachy is Ryan Adler of Monroe, N.Y., who also appeared in TNT's production of Surf's Up (Surfer Bongo). Adler was seen in the movie Park, shown at the New York City Short Film Festival, and onstage in Other People's Money .

Tickets for Last Night of Ballyhoo are $15; $12 for students, seniors and theatre parties of 10 or more. For reservations and information, call TNT at (201) 692-0200. If available, tickets can be purchased at the door prior to performance.

"SQUABBLES"
by Marshall Karp
directed by Harry Bates
July 7 - 23, 2006

FAMILY. THEY KNOW HOW TO PUSH EACH OTHER'S BUTTONS.

What happens when Jerry and Alice Sloan, a happily married couple, invite Alice’s father Abe to live with them? Maybe not what you think, because Jerry and Abe get along just fine. That is, until Jerry’s mother Mildred is added to the mix. To say Abe and Mildred don’t like one another is an understatement. To say they detest each other might be closer to the mark. But the ongoing squabbles between these two determined characters provide plenty of laughs.

The cast features Howard Kerner of Teaneck as the irascible retired cab driver Abe Dreyfus;

Ridgewood resident Penny Kaspar as tenacious Mildred Sloan;

Bonnie Rosenbaum of Weehauken as Abe’s down-to-earth daughter Alice Sloan;

and River Edge resident Robert Lohuis as Alice’s amiable husband Jerry Sloan.

Completing the cast are Bill Macchio of Dumont as Hector, a Spanish-speaking handyman;

Paramus resident Vic Sellarole as Sol Wasserman, Abe’s close friend;

and Laura Grunwerg of Hillsdale as Mrs. Fisher, a no-nonsense governess.

Squabbles might take place in suburban Connecticut, but this entertaining and diverting Summer show resonates with audiences everywhere.
